This take's place in alternate world from that of Jhonen Vasquez. Deep in the dark city, where much of the world's light is missing, Devi struggles about herself and the reason she's still alive. For years, she thinks she's a jinx because everyone that she loved has gotten hurt or killed and she also seems to attract the wrong people, if it's not a love one getting hurt. While going on a date with a man name Johnny, who seemingly was taken over a dark force, he tries to kill Devi, only for her to discover her own magic and blast him away. She then starts seeing a weird little doll, that talks to her and warns her of a great darkness coming.
Devi discovers her friend Tenna, has a doll as well. Turns out, those who use magic gain doll like familiars. Her doll, known as Demi (meaning small), takes the form of a doll that looks like her and a doll that Johnny gave to her. This is because Demi tried to give up on her happiness and positive side.
Working for the dark forces that plague him, Johnny and the other members of the mysterious force, are threatening to bring the world into complete darkness. It's up to Devi to awaken her powers and reveal the light she has been hiding in her heart. However, she won't do it alone. For she has loyal friends beside her, Tenna, her most loyal friend, a magician that uses shaman abilities with her familiar, Mr. Spooky and Eric, a young boy, who after sacrificing his life to protect Devi at a night club, becomes a vampire and comes back to help Devi once again.
